Re: implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights
Dear Donald, Dear Prime Ministers/Heads of States,
I thank you, on behalf of the European Trade Union Confederation, for the commitment you are going to endorse in the European Council this week on the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, proclaimed in Gothenburg on 17 November 2017.
Europe is one of the best places to live, work and do business in the world because our social market economies combine free markets, private initiative, economic freedoms, free movement of people and welfare states designed to deliver social rights and public services. Nevertheless, Europe is still faced with many economic, social and political challenges: insufficient competitiveness and employment creation, inequalities, migration, security issues, and the need to redefine EU-UK relations. These challenges require ambitious European solutions.
ETUC Assessment on the Reflection Paper on the Future of EU Finances
Adopted by the Executive Committee at its meeting on 25-26 October 2017
INTRODUCTION
The Reflection Paper on the Future of EU Finances, published on 28 June 2017, is the last one out of the five that the European Commission announced when publishing its White Paper on the Future of Europe on 1st March 2017.
The Reflection Paper presents five scenarios for the future of European finances.
The ETUC TU-I index below shows the involvement of trade unions at the milestones of the semester cycle at national level. It is still largely unsatisfactory. Despite the commitment of the Juncker Commission to a new start for social dialogue in recent years, governments have too often largely disregarded the involvement of trade unions in the design and implementation of their reform plans.

on tapping the potential from greening the economy for jobs creation
We, the European Social Partners
ACKNOWLEDGE that we are at a critical juncture for the European Union concerning growth and quality job creation, as the economic recovery continues, with differences across Europe, yet we continue to face significant economic, environmental and social challenges;
Jointly adopted by ITUC-ETUC and their four Turkish Affiliates following the 2nd Mission to Turkey on 3-5 May 20017.
The aim was, as the International and European trade union movement, to discuss with the four affiliated organisations [Türk-iş, Hak-iş, Disk and Kesk] the new developments in the situation of trade union members in Turkey, after a first visit in mid-October 2016.
The Steering Committee of the ETUC, in its meeting on 20 April in Brussels, discussed the results of the Turkish referendum held on 16 April on the reforms to the Constitution adopted by the National Assembly on 21 January.

ETUC assessment on the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
Statement approved at the Executive Committee 14-15 December 2016
Following widespread consultation, and debate in the Executive Committee, the ETUC has drawn up its response to the current phase of the European Commission consultation on the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR), which was adopted on 6 September 2016.
The outcome of the Bratislava Summit falls well short of the expectations of the ETUC, and of the joint statement made by trade unions and civil society organisations ‘A new Europe for people, planet and prosperity for all’ https://www.etuc.org/press/new-europe-people-planet-and-prosperity-all#.V9_HZ_B97cs.
The Bratislava Declaration and Roadmap are as notable for what they do not say, as for the few vague things they do say.
The ITUC and ETUC have strongly condemned the failed coup in Turkey and offered our deepest condolences to the victims. Unconstitutional attempts – especially involving military force – to seize power and overthrow democracy are unacceptable. We call for the investigation and eventual prosecution of those responsible to be conducted in full respect of the rule of law.

Adopted at the Extraordinary Executive Committee, on 13 April 2016 in The Hague
Towards the UK referendum
The European Union is facing grave challenges at the moment, and the ETUC would prefer to see the UK involved – together with other Member States – in resolving them, rather than turning towards national isolation.
